Designer Christian Siriano shared some good news for the fashion challenged among us at Cosmopolitan‘s Fun Fearless Life event sponsored by Maybelline this weekend: “Usually everyone that looks the worst is the most talented,” he said. “True story.”
He had been asked by Cosmo‘s deputy editor, Katie Connor, if he had any advice for looking good on interviews. “We have a girl that we just hired, and she really looks a mess, everything about her. But she is one of the most brilliant patternmakers I have ever met in my entire life, therefore I do not care. She can wear whatever she wants — drape that gown in one hour, and good to go.”
For salespeople, it’s a different story. “That role is all about presentation, unfortunately … you’re selling yourself, you’re selling the brand.”
Siriano himself wears T-shirts and jeans every day. “I am around ladies’ clothing all day long, and I get real sick of clothes,” he explained. “So that’s my thing … I don’t really buy expensive clothes. I love good bags!”
After the panel, he shared this piece of advice for twentysomething women: Focus on fit. “I think a lot of women aren’t really sure about their bodies, so they don’t always get their fit right, whether it’s too tight and too sexy, or way oversized and doesn’t show figure at all.” So if you want to improve your look, start there. But remember: Messy-looking girls can nail interviews too.
