Casey says he had “no knowledge” of the donation.

Casey Affleck’s Best Actor victory at the Oscars on Sunday wasn’t exactly a surprise, but given the past sexual harassment allegations against him, it was hard not to hope that someone else would squeak out a win. As it turns out, there was something else controversial about Casey’s big night: His production company donated $5,000 to Trump for America, a non-profit set up to aid the president’s transition.

In a statement to BuzzFeed News, Casey said that he did not know about the donation, and would not have allowed it if he did. “I am appalled that a donation may have been made in my company’s name by someone I work with,” he said. “I had no knowledge of it, was never asked, and never would have authorized it. I will get to the bottom of it. The policies of the Trump administration, and the values they represent, are antithetical to everything I believe in.” Casey started the Affleck/Middleton Project with John Powers Middleton in 2014, and the company backed Manchester by the Sea, for which Casey won his Oscar. Middleton has in the past been a supporter of Republican organizations, and donated $227,000 to a pro-Trump super PAC in 2016.
Casey has been vocal in his criticism of Trump and his administration, and at the Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday, spoke out against the president in his acceptance speech for Best Male Lead. “The policies of this administration are abhorrent and they will not last,” he said from the stage. “They’re really un-American… It’s a time to struggle for the future and the soul of our nation. I know this feels preachy and boring and I’m preaching to the choir, but I’m just lending my little voice to the chorus here.”
